Thursday, November 15
6:30-8:00 p.m.
Oak Room
Multnomah Falls. Portland’s iconic “bubbler” fountains. The Benson Hotel. These priceless public assets exemplify the dedication and generosity of lumber king Simon Benson. But who was Simon Benson, and how did he leave such a mark on the Oregon landscape?
Local author, filmmaker, and historian Sig Unander is a fourth-generation Oregonian. He began his career in broadcast and print journalism in New Mexico, Minnesota, Georgia, and Oregon. His 2006 film The Forgotten Eagles documents the history of the Mexican Expeditionary Air Force, an elite unit that participated with the US Army Air Force in the liberation of the Philippine Islands in World War II. He is currently working on a documentary film about Claire Phillips Snyder, an actress, author and activist who received the United States’ highest civilian decoration – the Medal of Freedom – for her espionage and humanitarian activities in the Philippines during the Second World War.
